I wonder if Alliss and Walker were in the same class as Benaud, Moore and Lowe. I think they (and McLaren and Maskell) fell into the trap of becoming parodies of themselves.

Ah. What a fella. Was a colleague of his for nearly ten years and probably never met a nicer bloke. Often filed 1000 words for his column which would continually be butchered down to 200 - yet carried on writing the same amount, knowing it would be cut. Just loved churning out cricket copy.

I remember Benaud saying how delighted he was to watch Bishan Bedi bowling 'beautifully' all afternoon, once. I was a bit surprised because I'd thought Bedi had got a bit of treatment from the bat, but it impressed me that an Australian was so enthusiastic about watching England v India.

Was just having a look at that 1989 series
England used 29 players in 6 Tests , Australia used 12.
Was really the start of Australia coming back after England had thrashed them in Australia in 86/87 (was 1-2 but that seriously flattered an outclassed Aust) & previously in 1985 in England.
Probably helped that they brought in Warne in 1993, then McGrath, Ponting & Gilchrist after.
